The world-renowned Sanskrit poem “Meghdoot” by the great poet Kalidasa has been translated into Bengali multiple times. According to the renowned researcher and professor Sri Naresh Chandra Jana, there are two reasons for this. First, it is the brevity and poetic grandeur of ” Meghdoot,” and second, the unparalleled complexity of the unique Mandakranta meter in Sanskrit. Bengali poet Satyendranath Dutta successfully adapted the Mandakranta meter into Bengali with utmost diligence. Although Jogindranath Majumdar attempted to translate ” Meghdoot ” into Bengali using the Mandakranta meter, complete success had previously proven elusive. However, this book stands as a testament to the innovative and devoted adaptation of this meter in the Bengali language by Parthapratim Bandyopadhyay.
